A Memorable Maker Super Saturday

Just as the Museum’s exhibitions can inspire year-round, the Maker Super Saturday is a special day to celebrate the makers, creators, and artists in our community.

Were you one of the 450 people who attended the Maker Super Saturday?! On January 25, 2025 the Evansville Museum hosted its second Maker event. Just as the Museum’s exhibitions can inspire year-round, the Maker Super Saturday is a special day to celebrate the makers, creators, and artists in our community. Featuring special guests, hands-on activities, demonstrations, and A LOT of cardboard, this Maker Super Saturday was an absolute blast.

I love that this event is a way to celebrate the makers, creators, and artists in our community. Special guests at this year's event included artists who create with bobbin lace, wool fiber, clay, LED lights, 3D printers, and paint. Representatives from the University of Evansville Fiber Arts Club were in attendance as were also members of E-REP's Technology Interest Group.

It truly is incredible how many hidden talents, interests, and skills exist within our community. Autistic self-advocate Josh Berkau demonstrated how he uses painting to share his voice, and one of the Museum’s own staff members demonstrated her incredible talent with thread.

And that was just the special guests! Several hundred community members attended and showed off their own talents in crafting with cardboard and other art supplies.

During the Maker Super Saturday, the Museum’s pavilion was turned into the Cardboard Creation Station. It was so cool watching people create whatever they wanted with the boxes. It was a huge experience; it took 4 people over an hour to clean up all the boxes once we were done, but it was so worth it! Thank you to the staff of JOANN Fabrics and Crafts and the many Museum Docents who saved hundreds of cardboard boxes over the past few months.

The Maker Super Saturday would not have been possible without the many volunteers who donated their time. Museum Docents and volunteers created demonstrations and ran activities, and special assistance was provided by several international students from USI’s Center for International Programs.

I also wish to greatly thank Mead Johnson Nutrition, BWX Technologies, Inc., Ciholas, Inc., and AstraZeneca, whose support provided all our guests free admission to the Maker Super Saturday. Thanks to these companies, money was not a barrier to attend.

The Evansville Museum intends to host the Maker Super Saturday again next year. If you would be interested in being a part of it, please reach out at education@emuseum.org.

And that’s not it for Super Saturday! Mark your calendars for June 28, 2025. We hope to see you there!
