Living in Evansville in the 1960s discussion—a conversation with J Wertz and Charlie Berger.

James Claude Wertz, Jr., J Wertz, was born in Evansville in 1931 and has been a resident of the city his entire life. J attended Bosse High School and William and Mary and Vanderbilt Universities earning his master’s degree in geology from the latter. He worked as a geologist for two years before joining his father at Maley & Wertz Lumber Company—a career that spanned 58 years. Wertz also served as president of the Oak Hill Cemetery Board from 1960 to 1963.

Charles “Charlie” L. Berger grew-up in Evansville and graduated from the University of Evansville in 1969. He received his law degree with honors from Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis in 1972. After graduating law school, he returned to Evansville and practiced with his father, Sydney Berger. Charlie has continued his father’s tradition of representing the working people in the Evansville area, and has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America for personal injury litigation for over 31 consecutive years.
