ELIGIBILITY
Any artist residing in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, or Tennessee may enter. All work must be original, completed within the last three years, and not previously exhibited in the Mid-States Art Exhibition or at the Evansville Museum.

MEDIA AND LIMITATIONS
The competition is open for the following categories: Painting, Drawing, Graphic Arts, Collage, Sculpture and Mixed Media. Entries must not exceed 108 inches in any direction and/or 150 pounds. No entry that requires the artist to be present for moving or assembly will be accepted.

ENTRY FEE
$40.00 fee entitles entrant to submit up to TWO entries. Make checks payable to the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science. Payment may be made by check, money order or credit card, please do not send cash.

ENTRIES SUBMITTED VIA CaFE
CaFE is a free service to artists, they allow you to make a user profile for free and then submit to calls for entry via their secure website. The only payments you will make are for the entry fee. https://www.callforentry.org/ You may select the option to pay by check through CaFE, simply fill out your entry online and choose the pay by check option. Your check will need to be received at the museum no later than September 25th to be eligible for the jurying process. Any checks received after September 25th will be returned and your entry will be removed. Please make check payable to Evansville Museum and include Mid-States in the memo. Entries by mail will not be accepted.

INSURANCE
All works accepted for exhibition will be insured, while on the premises, at a value agreeable to the artist and the Museum. Maximum insurance by the Museum for any entry will be $4,000.00. The Museum will not be responsible for insuring work in transit or works unclaimed after February 26, 2021.

RECEIVING
Works selected for exhibition will be received hand delivered or shipped PREPAID from October 25 – November 7, 2020 during Museum hours: Thursday 11am-8pm, Friday- Saturday 11am-5pm, and Sunday 12pm-5pm. Hand delivered packing materials will not be retained by the Museum. Please call ahead to assure that a staff member is available to accept your work. The Museum reserves the right for the Juror to reject, upon review, work with unacceptable artsmanship and/or quality not discernible in the digital images.

RETURN OF ARTWORK
Exhibited work may be claimed from February 18 – February 26 2021, during the previously stated Museum hours. The Museum will not be responsible for work not claimed by February 26, 2021 Shipped work will be returned in the method it was received, unless specified otherwise by the artist. All shipping costs and liability for damage are the responsibility of the artist. Please include prepaid return shipping label with your artwork. SALES The Museum takes a 20% commission for the sale of works from this exhibition. Please keep this in mind when setting your sale price. In the event of a sale, a check for the purchase price minus 20% will be sent to the artist no later than 30 days after the close of the exhibition.

AGREEMENT
Submission for a work of art to this exhibition shall be understood to indicate an agreement on the part of the entrant, with all conditions set forth, including permission for reproduction in general publication and newspapers. All purchase award winners will be asked to sign a statement granting the Evansville Museum a non-exclusive, royalty-free, and unrestricted license. By entering the show you are agreeing to the statements set forth in the prospectus.

EXHIBITION
The Mid-States Art Exhibition will be open to the public from November 22, 2020 – February 14, 2021. You are cordially invited to attend the Awards Reception- Date to be determined*. Awards will be presented at this time. Award winners, or their representatives, are requested to be present for the awards presentation. *Due to COVID 19, if we are unable to host a reception in-person, the museum will host a virtual reception.

PURCHASE and MERIT AWARDS
Over $10,000 in purchase and merit awards, underwritten by individuals, corporations, foundations and philanthropic organizations, will be awarded. Purchase award-winning works will become part of the permanent collection of the Evansville Museum.

Please note: Juror will select awards on October 15th after reviewing entries virtually with the museum’s art curator. All awards will be given at the discretion of the juror. Entries receiving purchase awards will become part of the Museum’s permanent collection. If the sale price stated is in excess of the assigned purchase award, the artist will be contacted immediately after the jurying and given the opportunity to accept or reject the award. NFS entries may be eligible for purchase awards. All entries are eligible for merit awards.

ABOUT THE JUROR
Catherine Javiera Huff is the Coordinator of Exhibitions and Permanent Collections and the former curatorial assistant of American and European art at the High Museum of Art, the South’s leading art museum, in Atlanta, Georgia. Born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, Huff graduated with honors from the University of Georgia with degrees in Art History and Romance Languages. During her curatorial research internship at the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, her solo curatorial project, “Man’s Canyons: New York City on Paper” was awarded the 2016 Student Project of the Year by the Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries. Huff’s history and dedication within High Museum of Art is expansive. She was introduced to the institution through the esteemed Andrew W. Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Summer Academy. In February of 2017, she was welcomed to the American art curatorial department, then in 2018, expanded to the European art department. Huff now works closely with each of the High’s curatorial departments in her recently appointed role. Her most recent departmental projects have included the popular traveling exhibition, “Something Over Something Else: Romare Bearden’s Profile Series” and “Fine Lines: American Works on Paper”, a permanent collection exhibition highlighting the strengths of the High’s American drawings collection. Huff is also a councilmember on the inaugural Atlanta BeltLine Public Art Advisory Board. Her interests include turn-of-the-century American art, historical African-American art, and the history and preservation of public art.

Virgo lactans and the Venus lactans

Join the Evansville Museum and the University of Evansville for the unique program, Virgo lactans and the Venus lactans. Presented by the 46th Mid-States Craft juror, Dr. Chrystine Keener, this presentation explores the lactation imagery of the Madonna and the goddess of love and their associations of protection and dispersal of pestilence during the Early Modern period. The lecture will be in Hyde 14 at the University of Evansville campus.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Chrystine Keener earned her Ph.D. in the History of Visual Culture from Indiana University, where she specialized in Early Modern art and culture. Her research focuses on the Italian Reformation, which predates the Protestant Reformation by thirty years, and its impact on the visual arts.

Artist Demonstrations: Jason Sturgill

Jason Sturgill’s graphic design background is evident in his colorful drawings. Using contour drawing techniques, his imagery of figures and objects are defined by lines and shapes suggesting movement. Small details are hidden in graphic embellishments reminiscent of graphic novel illustrations or comic books. 

Sturgill graduated from Morehead State University in Kentucky with a degree in music and his undergraduate studies also included classes in drawing, graphic design and printmaking. He received his Master in Education from MSU while working as a middle school art teacher. He currently teaches high school art in Lexington.
