Time for Summer Fun!

Summer is one of our favorite seasons in the Evansville Museum’s Education Department. And I think you can tell because we have so much planned for the next three months! Here is a quick recap of everything we have going on for guests to enjoy.

First up are summer camps. We have four summer camps planned: Astronomy Explorers Camp, Super Awesome Art Camp, Fossils & Rocks Camp, and Detective Training Camp. Registrations are filling up fast, and by the time this blog post is published we will have probably sold out all the slots, so I won’t spend very much time telling you about them, except that they are super fun, and you should definitely consider sending your child or grandchildren to our camps next year.

This summer also features the return of Yoga on the Back Lawn. This is such an exciting (yet relaxing) program because 1) it showcases the Museum’s beautifully and newly renovated back lawn and 2) it is FREE! We highly recommend a donation to yoga instructor Katie Glover, but it’s a great way to relax and start the weekend off right. Classes will be at 9:30 am on Saturdays June 11, June 25, July 9, and July 23. You can choose to attend one or all the classes. Registrations are appreciated but not required, and you can register at:  https://emuseum.org/rsvp

The Museum is super excited to announce that we will once again be the location for Voces En Acción/Voices in Action Young Girls of Color Leaders program. Led by Dr. Arcea Zapata de Aston, these programs provide leadership and empowerment classes through the lens of art, writing, and song to young girls of color ages 12 to 24 years. The Museum hosted the first Indiana session last summer, and we are delighted that Dr. Zapata de Aston has partnered with us again this year. Know a young girl who would enjoy this program? Visit http://www.educaeducation.org/vea/index.html to learn more.

In addition, Dr. Zapata de Aston will be offering Spanish language classes at the Evansville Museum this summer. Classes will begin in July and will be held on Saturdays at the Museum. You can learn more about the class schedule and their cost by e-mailing educa@educaeducation.org

At the end of June, we will have our first summer Super Saturday. The theme will be Up, Up, and Away! and will celebrate the Museum’s “Airplay: A Hands-on Adventure” exhibition and new “Living in the Age of Airplanes” show in the Koch Immersive Theater & Planetarium. At the time of writing, I haven't finalized exactly what the activities will be at this Super Saturday, but I can promise it will be full of awesome fun on air, wind, and flying. The date for that event is June 25th from 11 am to 3 pm.

Then, before you know it, we will have another Super Saturday in July! The date for that event will be July 23rd. We haven’t picked which topic we will focus on yet, so if you have any suggestions of something you’d love for us to do, either this summer or further down the line, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Are you interested in becoming more involved with the Museum? Are you 18 years or older and have some free time during weekday mornings? Want to meet new people who share your interests in art, history, & science? If you answered yes to these questions, then consider becoming a Docent! The Docent Association, the Museum’s fabulous volunteer organization that leads educational programming for school field trips and assists with special event days such as Super Saturdays, is looking to add new members. The Association will host a Welcome Informational Coffee on Thursday August 11th. Anyone interested in learning more can attend, meet the Docents, and learn about the program. To RSVP, please e-mail me at Karen@emuseum.org.

Finally, we'll wrap up the summer with our sixth annual Geek & Comic Con on Saturday August 27th. If you have not yet been to one of our Comic Con events, you need to check it out! It is a celebration of the art, history, and science of geek and pop culture. We have special guests, fun panels and activities, a costume/cosplay contest, and so much more. While the event is great for fans of all ages, it is especially popular with teens.

Hope to see you at one or more of these events. Have a great summer!
